Building a Navigation Component with Variables

Approach

Given the limitations and resources at our disposal, we approached this challenge in four phases: first, we formulated hypotheses based on user research, next, we employed the design system components to create the UI, then we conducted experiments and made iterative improvements to the final outcome.

Research & Insight

As we didn’t want to build on the assumptions of the problems we knew already, we were careful not to break what works already for users.

So, the first thing we did was understand what works with the current (old) product and what doesn’t work. Also, conversations with key stakeholders to understand the business goals, align on vision and adequately manage expectations were crucial.

I conducted several research sessions with 4 participants between 2 unique groups. Sessions included remote and in-person interviews, field study trips to some Photo Enterprenuers, and usability tests.

My primary goal was to understand the reasons behind people’s decisions, and the barriers they encounter when using or downloading Photos. To guide the research, I conducted a quick workshop with the team to determine some assumptions on WHY.

Search optimizations

In my role as the lead designer for the Homepage, I spearheaded the design and implementation of various improvements and new features that improved the search experience across Nappy's product offerings, resulting in enhanced user engagement and conversion rates.

Incorporating insights for more efficient decision-making

As part of a project to integrate AI into Nappy's products, I developed a new feature to assist users in selecting the most suitable assets for their needs. I implemented a new module on the asset detail page, providing information on the uniqueness and frequency of usage of an image. This feature enables users to discover more distinctive images for their projects, and to avoid a generic or "stock" appearance in their work.

From a business perspective, this feature also led to an increase in downloads for assets that had previously seen low engagement. This helped to close the download gap on the platform and attract new contributors. As a result, it had a positive impact on the company's revenue.

Contributor gallery

The contributions of photographers are crucial to the success of Nappy Photo's platform. As part of a broader effort to modernize the platform's technology and design, I collaborated with multiple teams to revamp the contributor's gallery. This included updating its appearance and functionality, resulting in a fresh new look and feel. The goal of this project was to better highlight and promote the work of Nappy's photographers, and ultimately, enhance the value of the platform.
